Overview
The Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations prepares you to safely operate the heavy plant used on civil construction sites. It covers the operating skills, site safety and communication needed to work as a plant operator on infrastructure, earthworks and roadworks projects.
Who it’s for
New entrants who want to become plant operators, existing labourers moving into machine operation, and current operators who want a nationally recognised qualification for the plant they already use.
What you’ll learn
- Working safely and applying WHS requirements around plant
- Conducting pre-start checks and routine plant maintenance
- Reading plans and locating underground and overhead services
- Operating plant including excavator, skid steer loader, roller, front end loader and backhoe/loader, with further plant available as electives
- Loading, unloading and transporting plant
- Communicating in the workplace and working with others
This qualification is made up of 16 units of competency (5 core and 11 elective).
Delivery and duration
Delivered face-to-face at our Bradfield facility with practical plant training in our yard, and on-site for students who are already working in the industry. Typical duration is 6 to 12 months depending on prior experience, or up to 24 months as a traineeship.
Entry requirements
- Minimum age of 18 years
- Construction Induction Card (White Card)
- Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to read plans and safety documents (an LLN assessment is completed at enrolment)
- The physical capacity to safely climb onto and operate heavy plant
- A Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- Steel-capped boots, hi-vis and appropriate PPE for practical sessions
Pathways
Graduates may progress to RII40720 Certificate IV in Civil Construction. Job roles may include plant operator, excavator operator, loader operator or roller operator.
